Our pets are a part of our family. So shouldn’t they get the same natural, secure and sustainable lifestyle?
Living in eco-friendly environment with your pets around isn’t that difficult a task. Just follow these 5 tips and you are set to live green with your pet.
- Choose natural food for your pet
Though pet owners are cautious of what they are feeding to their pets, there are still some quick reminders:
- Avoid pet food with a GMO label
- Avoid foods with added preservatives
- Go for organic food
- Check the USDA green organic label when buying pet food off the rack
It would be thoughtful if you prepare your pet’s food yourself. Being a full time pet chef may sound crazy but you can treat your pet occasionally. It will give your pet a chance to enjoy clean and less processed meal once in a while. It will also cost you less.
You may also go for a grain-free diet for your pet.
- Compost pet poop
With a pet in every second house, there’s a lot to deal with. Animal’s waste mostly either land up in plastic bags or remain on the ground until the rain sweeps it down to the rivers and beaches. You can compost it in your backyard. Make sure it’s far away from your vegetable garden. You may bury an old dustbin in your backyard and use it as a composter.
- Spay or neuter your pet
With handful of stray cats and dogs in every nook and corner, it is safer to keep your pet spayed or neutered. It will not only keep them safe but also keep them healthy. Spaying or neutering increases the lifetime of your pet. Moreover, it completely eliminates the chances of cancer and prostate disease in your pets.
- Green leashes and collars
Rodents, like cats and dogs, are responsible for a number of bird killings every year. They cause a serious threat to wildlife. That’s the reason vets suggest to keep them indoors. It is important to keep your pet leashed when moving around in the city with your pet. Though it’s not a mandatory law in all cities but it is important for you and your pet’s safety. It will also keep others safe. Green collars and leashes, made up of natural cotton and hemp, are classy and quite useful. Hemp is biodegradable, strong and pesticide-free. It is also hypoallergenic. Thus, it makes a durable and eco-friendly option.
- Choose green pet-care and cleaning products
You are sensitive to use shampoos and beauty products that contain chemicals like parabens, sodium lauryl sulfates, cocamide DEA, cocamide MEA, TEA lauryl sulfate and propylene glycol etc. So are your pets. Such products can result in skin irritation and other diseases like cancer. Use natural grooming products for your pets. There’s a wide range available in the market. They’ll benefit both, your pet and the environment. Same goes for your pet cleaning products. Choose them wisely. As gentle you want them on your pet, they should show same gentleness to the planet.
Follow these 5 tips and contribute towards the betterment of this planet. Live green, stay happy!
